Fruit Infuser

Is my green tea too dilute?

I’m trying to brew loose leaf green tea (Green Tropical from Mighty Leaf) and wonder if I’m making it correctly. I’m brewing it with sub-boiling water (180-ish degrees) for 2-3 minutes in a Japanese cast iron teapot with an infuser that is 2 inches deep and 2 inches in diameter. I use between 1 teaspoon and 1 tablespoon of loose tea, and 10 ounces of water, which puts the leaves in about 3/4 an inch deep of water. When I pour the tea into my tea cups the water is the correct pale green liquor color and has a distinct fruity smell. However, I don’t know what I’m supposed to expect with flavor, because what I’m tasting is a very very slight hint of fruit in otherwise hot water. The way people describe these green teas makes me think I should have a much more potent taste as opposed to this tiny bit of flavored water with a great but sometimes subtle smell. How potent should I expect this tea to be?

No, you’ve got it right. Green tea, in comparison to Black tea is very subtle in flavour and is more aromatic than it tastes. Even with normal green tea (with out the fruity stuff added) the colour is usually a yellowy-green rather than being properly green as some people expect and the colour doesn’t get much darker if you brew it stronger. The tea has a distinct smell to it but tastes pretty much exactly as you describe it – like a lightly flavoured hot water rather than tea – and will leave a slight after-taste.

When the English first landed at Japan the Japanese were very taken with their black tea and often paid many times what it was worth because of the strong flavours the different varieties offered compared to their teas.
